Love Canal Essay Example For Students

Love Canal Essay The Love Canal is situated close to Niagara Falls in upstate New York. The Canal was developed as a conduit during the nineteenth century, yet was surrendered in no time a short time later. The Love Canal story is basically the account of the a great many families who lived unwittingly among a surrendered poisonous substance squander dump. It wasnt the first run through in U.S history where this has occurred, nor was it the most exceedingly terrible, however it grabbed the publics consideration. During the 1930s before the Love Canal region was transformed into neighborhoods, the Hooker Chemical Company bought the region and utilized it as an internment site for 20,000 metric huge amounts of synthetic concoctions. In 1953 the Hooker Chemical Company offered the land to the Niagara Falls Board of Education for $1.00. There was a specification in the deed, which expressed that in the event that anybody brought about physical mischief or demise in view of their covered squanders, they would not be capable. Soon after, the land changed hands once more and this time home structure started straightforwardly adjoining the trench. Families who purchased homes here were uninformed of the waste covered in their patios. With all the new homes in the zone, a grade school was opened close to the side of the trench in 1955. Not long after the opening, understudies and instructors started grumbling of being singed, sick scents, and dark slime (Gibbs 21). It wasnt till almost thirty years after the fact that the administration at last chose to research the grumblings. Hooker confesses to covering around 21,800 tons of different synthetic concoctions in the channel. There are in any event twelve known cancer-causing agents in the waterway including benzene which is notable for causing leukemia in individuals (Gibbs 22). The air, soil, and water tests have discovered synthetic movement all through a ten square local location. The degree of the concoction relocation is as yet obscure. The wellbeing impacts because of the harmful waste dump are various and lethal. There was a high occurrence of unnatural birth cycles and birth abandons in youngsters in the 239 families that lived here. The episode rate was high to such an extent that in 1978 New York State of Health gave a suggested brief migration of ALL pregnant ladies and youngsters under two (Gibbs 22). In May of 1980 President Carter proclaimed a wellbeing crisis due to the anomalous measures of chromosomal breakage in the Love Canal inhabitants. In October of that year the President marked a bill to clear all families for all time from Love Canal. He did this not due to unfriendly pregnancies, chromosome harm or high concoction exposures, but since of mental anguish(Gibbs 23). There is information that has affirmed that youngsters living here are 2.5 occasions as liable to get seizures, 1.5 occasions as likely of having learning inabilities and 3.0 occasions as likely of having eye aggravations, skin rashes, stomach torment and hyperactivity issue. Ladies around there are at 100% more noteworthy possibility of getting lung malignant growth, while men have a 70% more serious hazard. These insights are just a modest quantity of the clinical issues these families confronted. The Love Canal presently resembles an apparition town with houses blocked, over-developed nurseries and a high steel fence encompassing the houses closest the waterway. There has been development done around the trench to attempt to contain the synthetic concoctions. The development was done to attempt to keep water from dousing into the trench and to stop the outward progression of synthetic concoctions into the network. The regulation comprises of a seepage framework comprising of eight-inch punctured earth pipes, laid twelve to fifteen feet down, enclosing the trench to capture water. The debased water at that point streams into a steel holding tank and is treated nearby by an enacted charcoal framework. The framework is then secured with a mud top around six feet down. Top soil and grass was then planted on the top to complete the task (Gibbs 24). .u22cbaab6cebc3683a17164f462992c55 , .u22cbaab6cebc3683a17164f462992c55 .postImageUrl , .u22cbaab6cebc3683a17164f462992c55 .focused content region { min-stature: 80px; position: relative; } .u22cbaab6cebc3683a17164f462992c55 , .u22cbaab6cebc3683a17164f462992c55:hover , .u22cbaab6cebc3683a17164f462992c55:visited , .u22cbaab6cebc3683a17164f462992c55:active { border:0!important; } .u22cbaab6cebc3683a17164f462992c55 .clearfix:after { content: ; show: table; clear: both; } .u22cbaab6cebc3683a17164f462992c55 { show: square; change: foundation shading 250ms; webkit-progress: foundation shading 250ms; width: 100%; darkness: 1; change: mistiness 250ms; webkit-change: murkiness 250ms; foundation shading: #95A5A6; } .u22cbaab6cebc3683a17164f462992c55:active , .u22cbaab6cebc3683a17164f462992c55:hover { obscurity: 1; change: haziness 250ms; webkit-progress: darkness 250ms; foundation shading: #2C3E50; } .u22cbaab6cebc3683a17164f462992c55 .focused content region { width: 100%; position: relative; } .u22cbaab6cebc3683a17164f462992c55 .ctaText { outskirt base: 0 strong #fff; shading: #2980B9; text dimension: 16px; textual style weight: striking; edge: 0; cushioning: 0; content enhancement: underline; } .u22cbaab6cebc3683a17164f462992c55 .postTitle { shading: #FFFFFF; text dimension: 16px; textual style weight: 600; edge: 0; cushioning: 0; width: 100%; } .u22cbaab6cebc3683a17164f462992c55 .ctaButton { foundation shading: #7F8C8D!important; shading: #2980B9; fringe: none; fringe sweep: 3px; box-shadow: none; text dimension: 14px; text style weight: intense; line-tallness: 26px; moz-fringe span: 3px; content adjust: focus; content embellishment: none; content shadow: none; width: 80px; min-tallness: 80px; foundation: url(https://artscolumbia.org/wp-content/modules/intelly-related-posts/resources/pictures/basic arrow.png)no-rehash; position: total; right: 0; top: 0; } .u22cbaab6cebc3683a17164f462992c55:hover .ctaButton { foundation shading: #34495E!important; } .u22cbaab6cebc3683a 17164f462992c55 .focused content { show: table; tallness: 80px; cushioning left: 18px; top: 0; } .u22cbaab6cebc3683a17164f462992c55-content { show: table-cell; edge: 0; cushioning: 0; cushioning right: 108px; position: relative; vertical-adjust: center; width: 100%; } .u22cbaab6cebc3683a17164f462992c55:after { content: ; show: square; clear: both; } READ: The human improvement record EssayFederal guidelines permit new Love Canals to be manufactured, perhaps in your back yard. These new landfills must be checked. The catch is that they are not observed by a capable office, however by the person who possesses the landfill. What are the odds that the person who is making millions is going to report any issues? Government, for some obscure explanation, won't utilize their position to drive the businesses to appropriately discard their squanders. The basic explanation might be on the grounds that they have the influence and cash. There are new reusing, killing and high temperature cremat ion methods of discarding 80% of our squanders securely. It appears just as our administration should quit disregarding our medical problems and help shut down the mechanical harming of our nation. Since the Love Canal has been abandoned, the state and nearby governments are attempting to exchange the homes. They wont admit to the medical issues at the trench. They will just recognize a worry for pregnant ladies and youngsters under two. On account of this absence of affirmation families could be moving go into these homes and bearing a similar clinical and enthusiastic issues that 500 families have just experienced. How I Use MeisterTask to Increase My Productivity as a Freelance Writer - Focus

How I Use MeisterTask to Increase My Productivity as a Freelance Writer - Focus My Week at a Glance Self-employed freelancers wear many hats; we’re the boss, employee, accountant, bookkeeper, customer service, project manager…   the list goes on. We need a good organizational system to keep everything in check. MeisterTask is the one that works best for me, and I’m here to share how. I love being organized. There’s something about sitting at my desk and knowing exactly what needs doing, where to do it and what steps to take first that makes life so much more peaceful. Especially since it wasn’t always this way.   In 2015, I made the switch from office life to a self-employed, freelance-writing life. While I was able to stay on top of things, I quickly learned that my organizational system of scattered post-it notes and various physical lists wasn’t going to cut it anymore. What worked in an office environment didn’t translate into the freelance writing environment. This discovery led me down an organizational rabbit hole. I researched and tried project management apps and programs. For a while, I managed by using multiple different programs. But nothing really fit with my organizational style. That is, until I found MeisterTask.   MeisterTask combines the project management functions I love with to do lists, calendar syncs and so many other functions I hadn’t realized I needed. Now, I use MeisterTask literally every day and I’ve streamlined my process to increase productivity. In this article, I’m going to share with you how I do that. Stay ProductiveSimple task management for freelancers Try MeisterTask Its free! Try MeisterTask My Week at a Glance MeisterTask allows me to easily assess, at a glance, what’s going on during any given week. This means I can schedule appointments and meetings for “slow” days well in advance. That being said, there is one day every week that I really reap the organizational rewards… and that is Monday.     Mondays Before MeisterTask, I used to spend a good chunk of each Monday going through various post-it notes, lists, organizational apps and project management apps to sort out the week’s work. This process took two to three hours. Now, I spend less than an hour reviewing my workload.   My Monday Morning Routine: Review the automation notifications.   Check my iCalendar. Write my week’s work into my day planner to-do list. Assess my work load per day.   Set the day’s tasks. Get to work. The fourth step ?â€" assess ?â€" is essential. After nearly three years of working with this system, I know exactly how many task cards I can complete in a day. Mondays are the day I divvy up the tasks so that no single day is overloaded… and no single day is too light on work.   Daily Every morning, I review my work load and add the day’s tasks, in order of priority, to the “My Checklist”. This gives me a quick reference throughout the day while I work, so I track my progress. Often times, my projects have multiple steps that take place over many days (sometimes weeks!), so even if I complete a task that day, the card remains to haunt me. The “My Checklist” function also allows me the supreme satisfaction of checking off a completed task, even if all I’m really doing is moving the card to the next “work on this” day.   Week’s End I review any incomplete task cards and, if they aren’t urgent, move them to Monday. Sometimes, I’ll have to work over the weekend. Luckily, this happens less and less (proof that an efficient organizational system is very good for your health… and social life). That’s what a typical organized week looks like for me. Time to dig into the nitty gritty of my MeisterTask setup. Projects Having all my projects listed on the MeisterTask dashboard means it’s easy to find specific assignments and task cards. Of course, it helps that I have organized everything in a way that makes sense to me.   Project Groups My projects are divided into four “Project Groups”: Freelance Business, Active Clients, Personal Projects, and Inactive Clients.   The Freelance Business group is where I keep my administrative and business operations projects. As it turns out, running your own at-home business requires a lot of different administrative and marketing tasks, like invoicing, social media posts, blogging, searching for new clients, keeping track of rates… and so much more. I put all these hats in this project group, so I never miss an important step. The Active Clients project group is where I keep all my, you guessed it, active clients. Each client gets their own “project”, with the appropriate sections and task cards. When a client becomes inactive, but hasn’t yet closed their contract with me, I move them to my “Inactive Clients” group (I only archive a client when they close the contract). This way I keep all the organizational structure, without cluttering up my project list.   Finally, the “Personal Projects” group is where I keep all my, well, personal projects. I really do use MeisterTask to keep chaos out of all aspects of my life … I even planned my wedding with MeisterTask!     Workflow In my experience, clients come in two types:   Those with multiple repeat projects and assignments; and   What I call “single project” clients, who have a single assignment for me at any given time.   I use the pre-set MeisterTask workflow for “single project” clients. Once assigned, the task card goes in the “Open” section. Then I move it to “In Progress” while I’m working on it. When the client approves the work, I move it to “Done” (where it’s automatically marked complete).   My workflow is a bit different for “multi-project” clients. My clients CiT and QM often have multiple types of assignments across different departments and categories. For them, I label each section with the department/category name. CiT, for example, has two different locations. Their assignments are split into three categories: location A, location B and Corporate. So, I named my sections as follows: When an assignment comes in, I create a task card with all the notes and details, including the deadline and a “steps to complete” checklist. Then I set the “due date” (aka the day I will work on the assignment). I update the card as I complete the steps, only marking it complete when the whole assignment is done.   While CiT and QM are set up much the same way, there is one workflow difference. QM, which stands for Quench Magazine, has 11 sections to CiT’s four. Among the many projects are online articles ?â€" here’s the workflow for those:   Create the task card in appropriate section. Work on project as per usual and submit.   Move task card to my “Submitted” section, where it’s automatically marked “Complete”.   Keep the card in that section, checking online for the article to appear. Archive once article is published. This workflow easily tracks when the articles are published online and ensures that none of them are left as drafts.   Admittedly, my setup isn’t so much a “workFLOW” as a “cards turn orange on the day I plan to work on them” system. It works for me, though! Plus the task cards themselves record timestamps whenever changes are made, so if I ever need to know where I stand on a project, I can just read through the notes, comments and timestamps. Checklists   I love checklists. No really. I’d make lists for everything if I could. I have a lot of different checklists ?â€" one for every recurring project I am assigned. MeisterTask’s multiple checklists feature allows me to save assignment-specific lists. Since my workflow is set up in such a way that the “due date” on the card is the “day I’m going to work on the assignment”, that means that each new due date responds to a different item on my checklist.   For example, Product Reviews have five different steps:   Request sample;   Follow up; Receive sample; Write the review; and   Prepare the article in the backend.   There is no way I can complete all of these in a single day. So I set the task card due date for the first step, then change the due date for each subsequent step.   Automations MeisterTask automations are a key time-saving function. While I have used MeisterTask’s multiple checklists feature since I first signed up, I am new to automations. I’m may not be using them to their fullest potential ?â€" I discover a new one almost daily. The two I very much love are “Recurring Task” and “Add Checklist”. I have recurring tasks set to populate on Mondays, with the task cards pre-set with the due date. For example, QM has multiple weekly social media campaigns. Their task cards appear every Monday, with the due date set for later that week. I can then switch the day that I work on specific projects, based on my workload for that week.   Another automation I’ve come to appreciate is the “Set Status” automation. I use “Mark Complete” on QM’s “Submitted” section, and the “Done” section of Single Project Clients and CP.   Tasks Creating a standard or template for how you keep track of content and create task cards goes a long way to keep your productivity levels high. So, now it’s time to get to the specific “card” features and how I use them.   In my mind, there are two types of tasks: one-time tasks and recurring tasks.   One-time Tasks I create these cards the moment I receive the assignment. This allows me to record the details right away ?â€" including the due date ?â€" and add any stray thoughts I have when I’m not actively working on the project. Inspiration tends to strike at odd moments, so having the card ready means all my ideas are recorded no matter when I get them. Recurring Tasks As I mentioned above, I use the “Recurring Task” automation to make these. I did want to share how I used to manage recurring tasks before I had automations (it’s pretty basic). On the task’s checklist, I included a final step “Duplicate card”. When I completed the rest of the steps, I would then do that final step “duplicate the card”, mark the old one as complete and edit the new one to reflect the next week’s assignment. Easy peasy. Now to break down the components of a card: Assigned to: I work alone, so my name always appears here. When I was planning my wedding, I did assign some tasks to my sister, who was helping me. The only task cards that are different are non-action cards, like my Info Cards, which aren’t assigned to anyone. Notes: This is where I put all the details ie. deadline, contact details, etc. I have when I first learn about the assignment. I also add details, thoughts and ideas here as I work on it.   Checklist: I have standard checklists for repeat assignment types; they each have specific steps and loading them to the appropriate task cards is easy. Date/time: I set the date as the “work on it” day, rather than the due date. When I’m feeling especially disorganized, I will take a few minutes to set the “times” on my task cards, so that they appear in my iCalendar in a more coherent way. Usually I don’t get that specific, but sometimes it helps keep me from stressing out.   Tags: I used tags once upon a time… now I don’t. So I usually leave this empty.   Relations: When an assignment has more steps than I can manage in one task card, I divide it into parts. For example, this Guest Blog had a “Research” step, an “Outline” step, and a “Writing” step, each with “sub-steps”. I created a task card for each steps and added their “sub-steps” as checklists. Finally, I set the relations so that Research blocked Outline, which blocked Writing. This gave me a really great visual indicator of what needed to be done when I sat down to work on it.   Attachments: As someone who works alone, I don’t often have to use the attachments part of the card. That being said, I can see how useful this is for group work collaborators can easily access the documents and links this way. Comments: I use these a lot for my product reviews. When I test a product, I write my notes in the comments and then, when I write the article, I can easily copy-paste my notes into the draft.     Remember, you don’t have to set your cards up the way I have! It just has to be consistent across all your tasks. When everything appears the same way, in an easy-to-understand manner, you won’t waste time decoding your notes, or the assignment itself. You can open the task and get right to work.   Syncs Perks One benefit of being a self-employed freelance writer is the ability to work from literally anywhere with internet access. While I can manage without my organizational system ?â€" I did before! ?â€" MeisterTask’s apps mean I don’t have to. I have the mobile app on my phone and tablet, and I use the Mac app when I’m at my desk. This accessibility makes it very easier to jot down thoughts for projects as they come ?â€" so if I do have a middle-of-the-night, lightbulb moment, I don’t have to physically get up to write it down. I can just type it out on my phone, on the appropriate task, and it’ll be there for me in the morning. Due Today List There were two driving factors for my initial switch to MeisterTask way back in 2017. One was the “list by due date” function on the dashboard, where all task cards appeared in order of due date. (They introduced the “My Checklist” function later, and when they did I may or may not have squealed in excitement.) Previous project management apps I tried made me look at the task cards project by project, which meant I spent a lot of time combing through each client project page and finding the highlighted “due today” tasks.   Calendar Sync   The second driving factor for me was the Calendar sync. I have my iCal synced across all of my devices ?â€" desktop, phone, tablet ?â€" so having my tasks all appear in that app, where my personal events and family events are recorded, is … very convenient.   I do want to note that MeisterTask DOES have their own calendar function (found through the Statistics Reports link). It only appears in a web browser though, so not as convenient when you’re on a device rather than a computer ?â€" but they don’t force me to use it, which is nice. Files Attachments I have linked my MeisterTask account with Google Drive so I can attach the appropriate documents and easily find all my work. As I mentioned above, I don’t often attach files to my task cards. But when I do, I use the Google Drive integration.   Stay Organized; Be Productive It’s been almost three years since I activated my MeisterTask account. This is, by far, the longest I’ve used any single program management or organizational platform. I’m always looking for ways to be more efficient, more organized and MeisterTask allows me to do that. I do, and will continue to, recommend MeisterTask to anyone looking for an organizational app… with one piece of advice: always remember that “being organized” looks different to everyone.   My system, how I use MeisterTask, works really well for me. I hope that it has inspired you and given you some ideas of how to make the most of your MeisterTask account. If it hasn’t, that’s ok! You go out there, and find what works for you. Experiment, play around with the different functions, and make the most of the tools available, so you can live your most productive life. Reparations For Slavery Slavery - 1218 Words

Reparations for Slavery? Harriet Tubman once said, â€Å"Now I ve been free, I know what a dreadful condition slavery is. I have seen hundreds of escaped slaves, but I never saw one who was willing to go back and be a slave.† What is a reparation? A reparation is the making of amends for a wrong one has done, by paying money to or otherwise helping those who have been wronged. The biggest question of time is should African Americans receive payments for slavery? Many people would say yes with no hesitation, but to a surprise many people would also say no. Black men and women are not dropping out of school because slavery happened. People are not homeless and hungry because slavery happened. Too often people use slavery as an excuse to what is happening today. So, what is the real reason for reparations? Many people may question why blacks need payments for slavery when slavery was over 150 years ago. There were about 12.5 million slaves, which means the number of descendant’s doubles. To pay people for slavery, the government would need to find each descendant and begin paying them. The bigger question is which descendant would the pay, and how many would you pay as well as for how long. A Beautiful Mind Free Essays

Mental illness and mental disorders have plagued individuals for many years before the development of the psychiatric community embraced the challenges of treatment with understanding.   It can be assumed that everyone has had an encounter with someone who is mentally ill at some point in their life. Stereotypical images of those with mental disorders encompass the erroneous image of a filthy homeless individual viewed talking aloud to some imaginary person or thing. We will write a custom essay sample on A Beautiful Mind or any similar topic only for you Order Now    Other images depict the mentally ill individual ranting and raving like some ravenous animal with wild eyes and an animal-like posture. These images are poor portrayals of the mentally disturbed often created by Hollywood as a means to keep viewers entertained.   Contrary to popular belief, a mentally ill person looks just like any other human being despite some peculiarities, however, in the society of today, anyone could be mentally ill. Background The Hollywood motion picture, A Beautiful Mind, was directed a documental-like story of an actual world renowned mathematician named John Nash (Grazer Howard, 2001).   Nash was born in West Virginia and later went on to attend graduate school at Princeton University in Princeton, New Jersey. He was then twenty-one years old.   Throughout his secondary academic career, Nash remained somewhat unsociable and preoccupied with his research and coursework.   He did not appear to have much time for dating or socializing with members of the opposite sex either. Nash’s competitive nature served as a driving force for his academic research and achievements.   His economic theories and studies enabled him to win appointments and academic recognition through much of his time while studying at Princeton University.   While his mathematic theories would leave a reasonable person ultimately dumbfounded and confused, PSYCHOLOGY it became like a second language to Nash.   Simple tasks like games became too complicated for him to participate in (Grazer Howard, 2001).   If it did not equate into a mathematical equation, then in Nash’s thinking, it could not be logical or proven to be absolute. Nash later met a woman, Alicia, while teaching at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT).   Over a period of time, the two began dating and later married.   Together they would have one child, a son, named John.   During the course of their marriage, Nash would become more and more distant.   He would blame the distance on his work and research. Analysis Psychological Symptoms Friends began to notice that his personal hygiene was lacking in the area of care and presentation.   He would regularly forget to shave, his shirts would not be tucked in properly, and his hair would be stringy and unwashed. He began walking with a noticed shuffle while simultaneously clutching his briefcase tightly against his chest as though it bore protection.   He socially disconnected from his colleagues by informing them that his research was classified (Grazer Howard, 2001).   Worst of all, he started forgetting that he was required to teach a class at MIT, and he would often not show up. During Nash’s time studying at Princeton University, he became good friends with his roommate.   He would meet up with his old college chum several times over the course of the following years.   It would later be revealed that Nash had no roommate at Princeton University, but rather he was assigned to a dormitory and resided alone the entire time (Grazer Howard, 2001). The imagined roommate was a hallucination (American Psychiatric Association, 1994).    How to cite A Beautiful Mind, Papers A Beautiful Mind Free Essays I enjoyed many things from the film A Beautiful Mind including the cast, the interpretations of being schizophrenic, and also the small amount of romance between John and Alicia. Think that the cast was very well picked, Russell Crower did an outstanding job portraying a man with schizophrenia. I could tell that Crower was eve comfortable with this role, considering how well he portrayed John Nash. We will write a custom essay sample on A Beautiful Mind or any similar topic only for you Order Now When I think about John Nash and his awkward, yet sophisticated, rationality Russell Crower really does justice to John Nash. Also, the cast for the other students, John’s peers, were well picked out also. All of the other students were intelligent and also a little cocky which makes sense as to why they don’t accept John. I also enjoyed the interpretations of being schizophrenic. It is very interesting going into the mind of John Nash and seeing the people that only he sees, and hearing the voices that only he hears. Lastly enjoyed how the film had a little spark of romance between John and Alicia, but that the entire film wasn’t about the romance, and love. The film was more about John and his brilliance than his love life. My only dislike for this film is that it was slowly moving. L, personally, enjoy movies that can invest myself in and really feel the characters. I could not relate to any of the characters considering they are all brilliant. Johns Anna’s second grade teacher tells Nash that he had been given two helpings of brain but only one helping of heart, I think that she means that he would stop putting math and science before how he is really feeling and that he should try to make friends and be more in-touch with others. As said before I really enjoyed Russell Crow’s portrayal of schizophrenia. I thought that it was very believable, from what I have seen, and was interesting whenever he would have schizophrenic fits around other students. The scariest part of schizophrenia for me is seeing things that others cannot. People with schizophrenia do not know if what they’re seeing is real or fake, and that is scary. Iv Therapy Essay Example

Iv Therapy Essay Intravenous therapy or IV therapy is when a patient is given liquid substances directly into a vein. The word intravenous means within a vein†. Therapies administered intravenously are often called specialty pharmaceuticals. IV therapy is commonly referred to as a drip because many of the ways it is administered use a drip chamber, which prevents air entering the blood stream and allows an idea of how much is flowing in to your body. Compared with other ways of administration the intravenous route is the fastest way to deliver fluids and medications throughout the body. Some medications, as well as blood transfusions and lethal injections, can only be given intravenously. The simplest form of IV therapy is given through a hypodermic needle. This kind of needle is hollow and allows for the drip to be administered directly to the vein. The needle can be directly attached to a syringe or even to tubing that may be attached to a drip of whatever medication is needed. The needle is usually put into a peripheral vein, this is any vein not in the chest or abdomen. Any easily accessible vein can be used but most commonly veins in the hand or arm are used. Central IV lines flow through a catheter with its tip within a large vein, usually the superior vena cava, or inferior vena cava, or within the right atrium of the heart. This has several advantages over a peripheral IV. It can deliver fluids and medications that would be too irritating to peripheral veins because of their concentration or chemical composition. These include some chemotherapy drugs. Medications reach the heart immediately, and are quickly distributed to the rest of the body. However central IV’s run a higher risk of giving you an infection, causing bleeding, and possibly even causing gangrene. A common reason to be hooked up to an IV is for dehydration therapy. Those unable or unwilling to drink or who have repetitive vomiting can receive fluid replacement IV. You are hooked up to a drip and your fluids and electrolytes are replaced through the IV in your hand or arm. There are two types of fluids that are used for intravenous drips; crystalloids and colloids. Crystalloids are aqueous solutions of mineral salts or other water-soluble molecules. Colloids contain larger insoluble molecules, such as gelatin; blood itself is a colloid. The most commonly used crystalloid fluid is normal saline, a solution of sodium chloride at 0. 9% concentration, which is close to the concentration in the blood. Ringer’s lactate or Ringers acetate is another isotonic solution often used for large-volume fluid replacement. A solution of 5% dextrose in water, sometimes called D5W, is often used instead if the patient is at risk for having low blood sugar or high sodium. The choice of fluids may also depend on the chemical properties of the medications being given.

Sample Timber Sale Contract Template

Sample Timber Sale Contract Template After your potential timber sale has been shown and all bids are received, you should notify the highest acceptable bidder and arrange to execute a written timber contract. Use the sample template below only to flesh out the first draft of your contract. The information you collect in the draft process will be used so this  exercise  is not wasted effort. Always have it reviewed by both a forester and a lawyer, and abide by their suggestions for changes and fine-tuning.   A word of warning: always be careful when using a sample timber sale contract. Do not duplicate it word for word. Its easy to copy an example thinking that it will cover all of your conditions, but in many cases, it will not be adequate. Here are a few reasons below: State forestry and environmental laws differ and a contract should be specifically written to reflect those differences.Conditions of the sale are never the same from one situation to the next. These conditions should be customized in every contract.Property located in and around the sale area may be subject to damage. Language in the contract should indicate penalties if damage to that particular property should occur.Your legal ownership status- individual, partnership, or corporate- may not be the same from one sale to the next and should be implied through the contract. The following template will start you in the right direction toward creating just the right contract.   Sample Timber Sale Contract This contract made and entered into this __day of__ ,20__ by and between __of__ , hereinafter referred to as the seller, and__ of__ , hereinafter referred to as the buyer agrees to purchase from the seller the designated timber from the area described below.I. Positivism Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 2000 words

Positivism - Essay Example Legal systems are not static, immutable structures but rather mutable, and ever-changing organisms. The fact that they are constantly changing means that some constancy as regards to the need to obey the "rules" of a legal system is needed. Otherwise there is chaos. The apparent paradox within the idea that "the mere fact that a rule is just or reasonable will not make it a law" and also, "nor does the injustice of a rule demonstrate that it is not a law" is in fact satisfied by an understanding that laws are, by their nature, limited in scope. Laws cover a finite number of situations whereas the experience of life for the series of individual human beings that make up a society is infinite. Thus it might well be "just" and/or "reasonable" to have a rule that people should be "kind to one another", but this will not make such a law feasible. Conversely, a rule that says that people of different races cannot marry (as occurred in the US South) is not made invalid as a law just because it is unjust. The morality (or otherwise) of a rule is, within the positivist sense, irrelevant to whether or not it is a law. It is a law because it is held within a complex legal structure that defines it as "law". If laws are essentially arbitrary in nature, why should citizens of ... The citizen gives up his "freedom" to do whatever he wants, and thus to break certain laws, in exchange for the government's promise to protect his/her safety. Thus a citizen stops at a red light - thus giving up his innate "freedom" to pass through it - in exchange for the government enforcing red light laws that will enable him to safely drive down the street when the light turns green. This is a very 'modern' theory of obedience to rules and laws, based as it is upon the idea that the government and its people have essentially mutual interests. Within Rousseau's vision, the State clearly exists to serve the People. Some earlier theories of jurisprudence relied upon more authoritarian principles of law obedience that, despite their age, still have relevance today. John Austin, with his The Province of Jurisprudence Determined (1832) suggested the idea of "habitual obedience", that is obedience given to a sovereign (or perhaps elected government) based upon a fear of sanctions. Crudely, people obey the law because they fear the consequences if they do not. On a superficial level Austin's ideas seem self-evident: people do avoid breaking the law because of the consequences if they do on an individual level. However, if a whole system of laws is based solely (or nearly completely) on "habitual obedience" then it is by nature fragile and ripe for change. A frightened people has no loyalty to the system of laws other than that which is forced upon them. If they get the chance to successfully rise up, or if another member of the ruling class sees a chance at taking over, then it is likely to occur. Habitual obedience occurs within totalitarian states and dictatorships, but these are often short-lived, while superficially

Apply effective communications techniques in a simulated interaction, Essay

Apply effective communications techniques in a simulated interaction, using appropriate tone and grammar - Essay Example One of the reasons that you are able to motivate the workers is due to your great leadership skills. Leadership can be defined as establishing direction and influencing others to follow that direction (Cliffnotes, 2013). Your leadership abilities have helped guide the company in the right direction. People with great leadership abilities are able to motivate the staff to achieve a higher level of performance that translates in greater productivity at the firm. Despite all your strengths as a manager there are areas in which you can improve in order to become a better leader. I have noticed that you barely ever ask for the input of the employees and that you always seem to want to do a wide variety of work tasks alone. A way for you to become a better leader is by having more confidence in the employees. This can be achieved by delegating responsibilities to the floor employees. The use of delegation increases the job satisfaction of employees because the workers feel that the company believes in their abilities to performed different work

Ignorance Is the Lock, Knowledge Is the Master Key Essay -- Law

Throughout childhood to adulthood, one may oftentimes hear the quote â€Å"knowledge is power†. It is a quote usually drilled into the heads of elementary to college-aged kids in order to encourage his or her pursuit of an education. As much as privileged students roll his or her eyes at the utterance of this quote, it is hard to deny the weight of truth in this quote when examining the history of many countries. This is especially true during times of oppressive rule. Freedom of press, information, and lines of communication are usually the main thing to be restricted when there is a hunger for complete control over a group of people. The shadow of ignorance is used to blind the oppressed and keep/hide them in the dark from any potential aid. In 1989, student demonstrations broke out in Beijing, China in Tiananmen Square. Since the 1970s, China was going through economic reforms under Deng Xiaoping, China’s leader. As time went on complaints were being made over inflation, low job opportunities, and suspected corruption in the national party. The Communist governments of Eastern Europe were failing, causing unrest and lost of faith amongst the Chinese citizens. The breaking point was â€Å"the death of reformist CCP general secretary Hu Yaobang† on April 15th of 1989 (Online). Students congregated in the square to mourn Yaobang’s death. According to the Berkshire Encyclopedia of China the government-run press fabricated what truly going on and attempted to taint the image of the protesters: The party mouthpiece, People’s Daily, published an editorial on 26 April accusing a â€Å"handful of plotters† of creating â€Å"turmoil† with the object of overthrowing the regime. The next day, 200,000 students from over forty universities marched to the squ... ...ite the wicked mistreatment of the slave. Despite being unhappy with their situation, the slaves could not effectively rebel because they did not have enough knowledge and information to do so. Knowledge truly is a power that can be used to help you or used against you. It can help you be in control or be controlled. For this reason, freedom of press and speech are constantly being fought for in many civil wars. Without knowledge, a person is subjected to the control of a person with greater knowledge. On the First of October 2017

On the first of October 2017, the Catalonian president Carles Puigdemont held a succession vote to declare the territory of Catalonia as independent from Spain. Ninety percent of votes were in favor for independence (Catalonia). Later in the month, on the 27th of October, Puigdemont declared the northwestern territory of Spain as independent. The Spanish government responded by suspending the Catalonian government and managing the region under the central government, which is justified under Article 155 of their constitution which entitles that the government of Spain can â€Å"take the measures necessary† to â€Å"protect general interests† (The Spanish). But the succession forces in Catalonia are trying to challenge the Spanish Constitution over the illegality of their independence. The question is if these blockades imprinted in the Constitution are moral to be put into place. This situation of political chaos has escalated to the extent where the former regional leaders of Catalonia are either in jail in Madrid or in exile in Belgium and if they were to return to the region of Catalonia, they would face prosecution for treason (Minder). However, this has not stopped the succession forces in the region to try and put Puigdemont and his cabinet back into office. The controversy in these situations lies on a case to case basis. The campaign in territories seeking independence is based on the prosecution and legality of the laws set in place by the mother country. In Kurdistan, the Kurds want to succeed from the Iraqi government due to the oppression the people have had from historically being manipulated by other governments (Ali). The debate on the independence referendum in Scotland is based around the kingdom's decision to remain part of the European Union or leave with the rest of the United Kingdom. To reach a decision in these debates, one must look into the social, political, and economic viewpoints for the morality of the independence situation for these territories. Initially, â€Å"the Kurds have long fought for their freedom, and have faced unimaginable oppression as a people† (Ali). This is the view of the 35 million Kurdish peoples long fight for independence starting back in World War Two. However, this movement has found conflict both in this region of Iraq and in the Western powers. In the case of Kurdistan, the debate if the territory should have their own state and if the United States and the other Western powers should support the Kurdish independence movement. Mohammed Ali's opinion on this, the referendum in 2014 followed disputes on the sharing of oil proceeds between the Kurdistan Regional Government and the Iraqi Government (Ali). This has had lukewarm reception by the Western governments. The Kurdish people have just reasoning and have proven reliable, so why would governments want to inhibit this process? So why, would the vote for independence in the region be condemned. Overall, Mohammed Ali is a journalist for the Independent and has articles about the situation in Kurdistan. Ali's bias, as formally stated, makes his statements very questionable and focused on his side of the argument. Krishnadev Calamur is a senior editor at The Atlantic and focuses mostly on news reports in the Middle East and Asia and on the United States involvement, which adds a sense of bias for Kurdistan to his articles.Subsequently, â€Å"Scotland is being dragged out of the EU against our will,† and this underlines the need for Scotland to have self-determination (Clock). The issue in Scotland and their movement towards succession is based around the United Kingdom leaving the European Union. Some of the nationalist parties in Scotland are organizing a referendum after the parliament of the United Kingdom decided to leave the European Union (Clock). These parties say that Scotland had little say in this matter and they think that Scotland would have better hopes of governing itself inside of the European Union (Clock). The increased following on the nationalist parties and the formation of a referendum would need to happen sooner than later if any movement is to happen in this territory. To analyze, The Herald newspaper in Scotland backed a no vote in the independence referendum but proclaims itself to be unbiased from any political belief. The newspaper is the eighth oldest newspaper in the world and has political bias depending on which authors are working for The Herald. With all of this noted, it can be inferred that the bias of this article is to the nationalistic side of the Scotland argument due to bold statements against leaving the European Union. In Catalonia, the constitution instituted Article 155 in Catalonia to stop the region from leaving Spain. This independence movement has hurt Catalonia as a whole. â€Å"Unemployment, retail sales, and tourist numbers all came in worse than expected for the end of 2017 while the growth of the Catalan economy lagged behind the nation as a whole† (Savitsky). This economic situation did not trouble Catalonia before this active movement for succession. Catalonia has added up to sixteen percent of the population and twenty percent of the Spanish economy, which is 223.6 billion euros as of October 2017 (Bosch). If the government of Catalonia is able to succeed, the tensions between the two sides would reduce, and the governments could focus on more important issues, like the economy, and be able to progress further separately. To evaluate, this side of the Catalonia issue shows that if the region of Catalonia is able to succeed, it would allow both Spain and Catalonia to progress from their currently regressed economic situations. From this position, it would be the best for both sides for Catalonia to become independent. From the opposing viewpoint, Kurdistan would have a struggling economy if they became independent. An Iraqi trader mentioned that â€Å"the market would die† if the Kurds threats became reality (Dziadosz). The economy in the region is based on oil sales that add up to ninety percent of its revenues (Dziadosz). This could bring a problem of self-reliance for the Kurdish people. Also, the majority of the oil goes to Turkey, which questions to the viability of the economy of an independent Kurdistan arise (Dziadosz). Despite this, even Turkey is against the independence of the Kurds. The President of Turkey Recep Tayyip Erdogan mentioned the Kurds vote for independence as â€Å"treachery† and that the region would â€Å"not find food or clothing† if independence ensued (Dziadosz). This threat has kept the Kurds from becoming independent is due to the one dimensional economy of oil and the fact that basic goods in the region need to be imported (Dziadosz). Based on the facts, should Kurdistan become an independent nation with the knowledge that it cannot support itself economically. To evaluate, Alex Dziadosz is a freelance journalist currently based in Lebanon and has been awarded the New York Press Award for his reporting in Iraq. Based on this, Dziadosz has seemed to take evidence of his findings from the Middle East to make his own credible statements and this article seems to be no exception. Moreover, Scotland is seen to be better off if Scotland stays with the United Kingdom. As a whole, the United Kingdom is a world power that is both relatively small both geographically and in population. Scotland benefits from being considered a world power. Scotland also values the United Nations, where the United Kingdom is one of the five permanent members on the world security council (McCafferty). This makes Scotland, England, and Northern Ireland stronger together than in their separate ways. As well, the complaint that Scotland is not represented in the United Kingdom is not true. Based on evidence, Scotland has more money spent on public services per person than that of England, a  £1,460 difference (McCafferty). As with that, the general public opinion in Scotland is that they are â€Å"equally Scottish and British† and many Scots have family across the border (McCafferty). In analysis, Ross McCafferty is a writer for the Scotsman that talks about his views on politics and sports in the United Kingdom and Scotland. The fact that McCafferty states his views in his articles could make them have questionable bias if they are not backed up with facts and not recognize the other side of the issue. McCafferty's article has a bias for continued union with the United Kingdom but is no less reliable based on the facts and evidence proposed in the article.Furthermore, the issue of the independence of Catalonia is a risk of uncertainty for the region. Economists at Berenberg Bank, one of the leading private banks based in Germany, mentioned that there was no practical way for Catalonia to become an independent nation inside of the European Union (Kottasovà ¡). With independence, Catalonia would not be a World Trade Organization member, and would face major trade barriers (Kottasovà ¡). With these blockades, the price of imported goods into the region would rise, and would result in more unemployment (Kottasovà ¡). The region could also use the euro as a currency, but with no representation, as they would not have a seat in the European Central Bank (Kottasovà ¡). With this, the region of Catalonia would face barriers far larger than the ones that they currently have with Spain. This would most likely result in the loss of the rest of the Spain as a trade partner. With this, would they be able to risk the uncertainty that would ensue with independence? To evaluate, Ivana Kottasovà ¡ is a reporter at CNN Money that covers European business and economy. The article covers both sides of the issue in Catalonia but focuses mostly on the perspective of Spain. The author's credentials and the evaluation of both sides of the case makes the case of the economics seem credible. Thus, after the evaluation of the cases, one can decide the logical perspective that each case should be placed into. Initially, my perspective on the issue was for the independence for these territories. But after extensive research and contemplation on the subject matter, my perspective has changed. Currently with the Kurdish people, there is evidence of an inefficient economy based solely on oil with an unestablished government. Secondly, in Scotland, the country would be better prepared, both economically and politically, to stay with the rest of the United Kingdom. No matter what the nationalistic politicians claim, they are receiving help from the rest of the union. However, I still believe the circumstance in Catalonia is still under debate. The Catalans have a diverse economy in a territory around the size of Belgium. The territory also has the political leaders ready to take the next step from Spain with the public opinion of the region on their side. In final analysis, the information presented is still very limited. There is a need for the evaluation of the individual bias of the leaders of each government to ensure that their beliefs are for the best. Along with that, there is the need for the analysis of past territories that have either become independent or have stayed with their union. The issue at hand is very complex and is in need for further review for each case independently. Overall, I stand that the territories should be able to show their protest, but in the cases provided, these territories should stay with their current nations.

Are Grades and Effective Means of Motivation - 733 Words

Grades are an effective means of motivating students to do their best work. Believing: Grades are often seen to be one of, if not the most effective method of motivating a student to work to their fullest potential. For example, a student who receives an A-grade is going to be encouraged by the grade, as they see it to be an affirmation of their academic efforts. An A-student views their grade with pride, and will work very hard to maintain said grade, once achieved. An example of this is as follows. John recently received an A on his Math test.
